In 2004, I invented a mechanical puzzle consisting of a triangular box and three blocks. I have had six of these puzzles produced (by an excellent local woodworker). There are currently no plans to make more. It was entered as “Triple Trouble” in the 2005 IPP Design Competition, and didn't win squat. The object is to put the blocks into the box. At first glance, everyone thinks it's really easy; at worst, it's a matter of finding the right re-insertion order, right? In fact, it's quite a bit more difficult than that. No dirty tricks, just lots of weird angles. This puzzle has ruined the evenings of some extremely intelligent people, as well as Somerville mayor Joe Curtatone. |
